Don Quixote is a (blue) penguin

Possibly my favourite shop so far (except for the 8-floor Yodabashi Camera in Akihabara that just sells electricals and electronics) is ドンキホーテ, a Western name that actually works quite well in Japanese. Quite what the Don himself has to do with the blue cartoon penguin who is the logo of the shop, I don't know. It's a chain of huge discount shops that seem to sell almost everything. Think of the entire stock of Argos on shelves, joined by a whole load of dressing up costumes and much more dubious things, all complimented by hand-painted murals on the stairs (which make it look like an enormous squat) and different, maximum-volume music playing every couple of aisles (especially noisy rock and house). Possibly the most stressful place I've ever tried to shop - worse even than Bank-Holiday-Weekend Ikea.

I bought new boots in sport's world this morning, so I know the feeling. One spotty 14-year old trying to manage an entire floor of people asking for different boots in different sizes, and inevitably always coming back with the wrong ones. I ended up with white boots with blades instead of studs which kinda says it all! Hope the rest of life is less stressful (although obviously you thrive on the stuff!).
